Social/presentation evening

The club social and presentation evening took place on 12 November. An excellent buffet was followed by presentation of trophies to tournament winners, followed by the traditional dastardly quiz. A good time was had by all.

Club tournament

Our club tournament was again very successful and thanks are due to Mary Oliver for all her efforts in making this happen. We had around 50 competitors and the tournament added considerably to the competitive spirit around the club over the summer. Well done to the winners of the main competitions – Graham Auld (Men’s Singles champion), Francesca Bell (Ladies’ Singles), Graham Auld and Patrick Brooker (Men’s Doubles), Francesca Bell and Thomas Barnes (Mixed Doubles), Francesca Bell and Kate Wilson (Ladies’ Doubles). Well done also to the ‘plate’ winners (for players knocked out in the first round of the main tournament) and to all who participated.

Season 2016-2017

Season 2016-2017 has been a very active and busy one. Social tennis was much enjoyed as were the sessions organised by the individual team sections. On the competitive side we had 16 teams taking part in league competitions, enabling members of all standards to enjoy playing in a friendly but competitive environment. Many of our players were playing team tennis for the first time and we will continue to encourage such opportunities for all age groups and varying abilities.

Gateway into the Community

The club has been delighted this summer to host a series of visits by Gateway into the Community, a Hexham based charity for people with learning disabilities. The sessions were thoroughly enjoyed by the participants and we, as a club, are pleased that we have been able to provide the opportunity for the group.

New coach

Our coach David Esther has left to take up a tennis academy opportunity in Bristol. We wish David well and thank him for the good work he did at the club during his time with us. We look forward to a fruitful relationship with his replacement Tom Geary who is keen to develop sessions with all members whether in groups or through individual coaching.

LTA visit

We were honoured recently to host a visit to our club by Cathie Sabin, President of the LTA. Cathie was very impressed by what she saw and stayed longer than her schedule planned. She was intrigued by the history of the club and delighted by the facilities the club offered residents of the town. She also enjoyed watching youngsters from age 5 to 11 participating in a school holiday tennis camp.

End of season social and other news

As our summer season of tennis draws to a close I am writing to invite you all to our end of season social and presentation evening which will take place on Saturday 12th November in the cricket club house at Prior’s Flat starting at 7.30 pm.

On Saturday 10th September our tournament finals day took place and those people who were present, either as finalists or specatators, were treated to a stunning display of high quality tennis and a sumptuous shared afternoon tea. Our presentation evening is partly to honour the achievements of the worthy winners, but also to celebrate the achievements and enthusasiasm of all those who took part in the tournament, making it a successful event. The occasion is also an opportunity for as many members as possible to come together to enjoy a shared supper and an excellent quiz. Please do come along and bring a small contriubution for the shared supper

Please find below the list of results to date. A fuller report on the tournament will shortly be appearing on this site and facebook page.

Don’t forget that you can still play lots of tennis throughout the winter months. If you plan to play after dark remember to get your floodlight tokens from either myself, George Miller or Jim Buckley. Just telephone or email one of us. You will need to pay for them as you get them and the cost is still a modest £2 per token which gives you half an hour of tennis.

Tynedale Tennis – Ladies Captains Report For The 2016Season

My fourth year as Tynedale Tennis Club Ladies Captain has been a very hectic but also enjoyable one.

We started the year with a well attended Pre Season Meal and get together at Vercellis. This was enjoyed by all attending, other than Fiona’s chicken was hard to catch.  I may look for a new venue for 2017, as the dining area was very busy, and the noise level from other diners may have drowned out my pre dinner joke telling.  That, of course, may not have been a bad thing for many of you!

The future look and shape of the teams has changed, with the retirement from team play of such stalwarts as Anne Thompson, Maureen Harte and Jill James. New blood has come in, and the formation of new partnerships taking shape.  This has been the most satisfying part of the year for me, seeing new ladies playing for the teams.  I would like to make special mention of Catherine Whaley, Mary Williams, June Lomax, Jane Murray and Emily Gibson for their input to the teams this season, some fantastic results as individuals and pairings too.  I would also like to mention ladies who, when called upon, are there for the teams, such as Sarah Elliot and Kate Thick who paired up for a Vets 2 match.  Their assistance within the squad enabled Tynedale to always turn a team out, and thus evade the terrible fate of being relegated to the lowest Division if a match is conceded.  I would also like to mention Ingrid Jongman and Jane Pender as players who have stepped up a level this year too.

My overall objective for the season was to introduce new partnerships, encourage existing ones, and to […]
