Trees

During the recent severe winds we sustained damage to a number of our trees alongside court 7 (top courts). This brought to a head the situation regarding the future of this line of trees.

A 60 foot conifer toppled over in the gales and brought down three sections of the chain link fence surrounding the courts (which is presently undergoing repair). A number of adjacent trees were also damaged and need to be removed.

The future of this row of conifers was already under review as the pine needles are causing damage to court 7 by clogging up drainage. We have kept this damage to a minimum over the year by use of our new brushing machine but this does not represent a permanent solution to the problem.

In view of the storm damage it has been decided, after consultation with a tree surgeon and taking into account his recommendations, that the appropriate solution is to remove the entire line of conifers which are now becoming a liability to the club. This work will take place immediately after Christmas.

It is appreciated that this will change the aspect considerably but it will open up the area and create a new look. The area will be tidied up and new, more suitable trees, will be planted at the appropriate time.

Further thanks to Rachel Oliver for her enlightening presentation on her work in Burkina Faso and to Christian Steward for presenting the raffle prizes in his usual inimitable style.

Thanks also, of course, to our Ladies’ Champion Mary Oliver who organised the tournament and made it happen – it is perhaps fitting that she should lift a winner’s trophy!

Through the raffle and the auction of Jak Alnwick’s goalkeeping gloves we raised £181 towards club funds.

Finally, the quiz accolades this year go to the ‘Doubles Entendres’ team which comprised Keith and Rachel Buchanan, Trish and Andrew Gillespie, Pam and Fiona Pye and their guest Judy Mercer. It was a close run thing, so well done to all those participating.

Pat Docherty

Unfortunately Pat has had to hang up his tennis racquet due to a health problem and he wishes to pass on his best wishes to all his friends at the club. Pat is one of our most senior members and will be a sad miss on Saturday afternoons. Hopefully we  will see him socially next season.
